A Clear Guide by Navigators Overseas

Australia selects skilled migrants for Permanent Residency (PR) through a points-based system. This system is mainly used for visas like the Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa and other skilled migration pathways.

Instead of applying directly for PR, candidates are ranked based on points, and only the highest-scoring profiles receive invitations.

STEP 1: Build Your Profile (Eligibility Stage)

Your PR journey starts by building key factors that decide your points:

  • Age (younger applicants score higher)
  • Education (degree level matters)
  • English proficiency (IELTS/PTE score)
  • Work experience (overseas + Australian)
  • Australian study (extra advantage)
  • Regional study (bonus points)
  • Partner skills (if applicable)

These factors together form your total points score.

STEP 2: Calculate Your Points

Once your profile is ready, you calculate your total score out of the points system.

Typical competitiveness:

  • Below 65 → weak chance
  • 65–75 → moderate chance
  • 75+ → strong PR chance

Higher points = higher chance of invitation

STEP 3: Submit Expression of Interest (EOI)

You then submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in Australia’s SkillSelect system.

This is NOT PR.

It simply means: “I want to be considered for PR”

STEP 4: State Nomination (for 190 visa)

If applying through Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa, Australian states can:

  • Nominate your profile
  • Add extra points
  • Increase your selection chances

Each state selects candidates based on its labour needs.

STEP 5: Invitation to Apply (ITA) If your points are competitive: You receive an Invitation to Apply for PR This is the turning point of the process.

STEP 6: PR Application

After invitation:

  • Submit documents
  • Medical examination
  • Police clearance
  • Skill verification

STEP 7: PR Grant

If everything is approved:
You receive Australian Permanent Residency (PR)

CORE IDEA (VERY IMPORTANT)
The points system is NOT a visa
It is a ranking mechanism

Australia does NOT give PR randomly — it selects the best profiles based on:

  • Skills
  • Education
  • English
  • Experience

FINAL UNDERSTANDING (NAVIGATORS OVERSEAS)

The Australian PR system is a merit-based selection process, where your profile is ranked against other applicants.

Success depends on:

  • Building strong points/li>
  • Submitting EOI correctly
  • Being selected by a state or system
